The Szlag instrument line has been an effort that evolved from many experimental prototypes and tests over the years. Our designer, manufacturing and artist relations director, John J. Slog, had many years experience owning and repairing high end and vintage guitars and basses, wrote monthly columns for Bass Player Magazing as well as Vintage Guitar Magazine and has been playing bass for decades.

John's business, Guitar Villa, represented, serviced and sold over 18 high-end bass and guitar lines over the 25+ years in business, and these lines of instruments were born to fill a need and void in the market.
We believe we have achieved the ultimate in comfort, resonance and playability with these instruments.
The design conception for the soliod bodies were sketched and edited on numerous drafting sheets and then it became time to experience this instrument concept – full size - in person. Unlike most other instruments, it did not start out as a block of wood. It is a design that had complex contours and angles that would not normally be created out of wood initially. This was accomplished by the purchase of some large blocks of clay. The clay was sculpted into the basic form and then painstakingly shaped and contoured from tone woods, into what you see here today.
After the clay hardened, the woodworking tools came into play and were used to interpret the shape into a full scale wooden buck prototype. This full scale basic shape husk had all the curves and angles, but still did not meet all our goal requirements needed to become what some have said is "the ultimate players instrument".
If we would have stopped at this point of conception and made that early prototype our final production offering, it would just be a nice looking and cosmetically different version of many of the other high end instruments on the market. This is where all our original concept and design ideas came into play. The remainder of the concept, design and build feature story is confidential and specific to this line. It functionally differentiates us from other instruments and manufacturers in the industry and makes this instrument exceptional.
These instruments are custom crafted and the optional woods, pickups and electronics available are vast, to make your prized instrument a one of a kind custom build, just for you. Nitro-cellulose lacquer is used on all custom instruments manufactured.
Every component and material has been carefully selected to achieve the ultimate instrument goal, and are the best possible available. The species, cut, density and geographic source of the wood, makes a huge difference in the final tone and resonance of the instrument or drum. The level of craftsmanship, quality of materials, features and hardware, also greatly affect the outcome.
With our experience and knowledge, your imagination is your only limitation. We can take you dream and advise you on the best possible features, woods and hardware, to reach your goal.
The best, is surprisingly affordable.
The 4 string Szlag Custom has an MSRP of $4700. and a direct price of $3300. and the 5 string Szlag Custom bass carries an MSRP of $5100. and a manufacturers direct price of $3600.
We are proud to offer hand crafted Szlag Custom Acoustic guitars as well. These instruments combine classic styling, body shapes that have been proven over the past century as well as the most modern breakthroughs in acoustic guitar manufacturing. We are employing torrefied Adirondack spruce tops and braces on some builds, to achieve that "seasoned and played in" tone in every hand crafted instrument we complete. The playability, natural tone, ergonomics and stunning woods are showcased with what we feel are the best techniques in guitar manufacturing.
Like the finest made acoustic guitars from the 1940's and 50's, the build process is slow and precise and we are using old school nitro-cellulose lacquer to finish these fine players instruments.
All instruments are available at manufacturer's direct price - exclusivley at Guitar Villa, Bethlehem PA.
Make an appointment to stop in to our showroom at Guitar Villa (4 miles from the Martin Guitar Factory) and play one of these instruments to experience the best comfort, feel and tone attainable at any price.
